We had New York trainer Patrick Frost and San Diego manager Derrick Sobotka tackle this week’s questions.
Q: I’ve lost weight, but not my double-chin. Is there any way to get rid of it?
– doroughtlover (via Twitter)
Patrick Frost: Unfortunately, you cannot pinpoint where you lose weight. Just like you can’t pinpoint where it goes when you gain it. If you’re on the path of losing weight and changing your body for the better, give yourself some time to see big results. If it took you 2 years to gain 60 lbs it may take you about the same to lose it (in a healthy way).
Q: What’s your favorite must-do, fat-burning muscle-building move?
Derrick Sobotka: I am a huge fan of combination moves that are still attainable to everyone in every different fitness level. Take your standard “burpee” for instance…this is my personal favorite. The simplicity of this range of motion is extremely effective in spiking your heart rate to an efficient fat burning cardiovascular level. Yet even though the cardio element is prominent, you are still applying the resistance training methodology just by using your own body weight. The other great thing about the Burpee is that you can change it up in so many different ways to the degree that you could almost never do it exactly the same way twice. The burpee with a pushup at the bottom, burpee with weighted front load press, One Leg Burpee, etc. The Basic Burpee is, in my opinion the best, and my personal favorite, fat-burning muscle-building move because you are engaging your entire body . Your heart rate increases to kick off your body’s fat burn mode, upper body engages with the drop to the floor (especially when you add the pushup), core fires off the entire time to stabilize, and the lower body is in constant work mode with your kick out at the bottom and your jump at the top. High impact and highly effective. Always my go-to move to kick things up a notch.
Patrick Frost: I love BURPEES! Any deconstructive version of it as well. My Favorite version is my “walking burpee”. Starting in Push-up Plank position you walk your hands to your feet, Jump as high as you can, land with a soft knee and walk your hands back out to a push-up. You have your cardio/strength with a core focus all in 1 combo move! LOVE IT.
