This is the time of year when I get hit up more frequently with questions about shaping up, trimming down and busting through plateaus. Yep, it’s official now. PANIC has set in because summer is impending and bathing suit season is looming. Take the fear out of the summer strip-down! Here are my 7 sure-fire secrets to rock a sizzling body for summer that everyone can stick to:
#1 SAVING FOR A RAINY DAY
Treat your diet like a bank account, if you make a heavy withdrawal and hit that calorie bank hard one day, you need to live a little leaner until your next “payday.” Skip the extra cocktail after work or give the waiter the stink-eye when he comes near you with the bread basket! It’s not rocket science, just math….calories add up, so make them COUNT!
#2 DON’T SELF-SABOTAGE
One of the biggest workout mistakes isn’t made in the gym – it’s made in the KITCHEN! Think of food as fuel for the body. Would you put cheap gas in your brand new Maserati? NO WAY! You would fuel up on the high-octane stuff! Treat your body like a high performance machine and it will act like one. AND just because you worked out doesn’t give you license to eat whatever you want….NO ONE can eat whatever they want.
#3 NO STOPPING
We all have an internal voice, a GPS which guides us, tells us when it’s time to hit a class or stop eating when we feel full rather than eating until our plate is empty! But life is not perfect and neither are we, so if you fall off the wagon occasionally, don’t beat yourself up! The GPS in your car doesn’t freak out and yell at you when you take a wrong turn and then steer you off into the ditch. It calmly tells you to take the next U-turn and how to get back on track. You can use the same approach. Don’t stop! Forge ahead and get right back on track, continue on your journey…with this new approach, you might even EXCEED your goal!
#4 SCHEDULE IT!
The weather is getting warmer, your social calendar is going to fill up, so SCHEDULE YOUR WORKOUTS FOR THE WEEK! Write it down and hold yourself accountable. Make it high on your list of priorities and it will become a habit. Move your body and your body will thank you. Skip the cab and walk, don’t wait for the elevator and take the stairs, or meet your friend for a walk instead of a latte. Time to crank up the intensity. Every rep counts, every step counts!
#5 STEP UP YOUR WORKOUT
The last time you worked out, did you sweat? I MEAN REALLY SWEAT? Working out should be just that…WORK! The sooner you get out of your comfort zone, the better! If you continue to do what you always do, you will have the body you have always had. PUSH HARDER and you will change your body. Just paying the price of admission is not going to get you your beach-worthy body! Remind yourself that you’re not there to hang out, you’re there to work out.
#6 STAY HYDRATED
You know you are supposed to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, but did you know it can help in your quest to lose weight? Believe it or not, many people confuse dehydration with hunger, causing them to eat more when all their body is craving is a tall glass of water. I’ve heard the excuse over and over, “Working out really hard makes me more hungry!” No, you’re thirsty. Drink two glasses of water and call me in the morning. The body also needs water to process calories. If you are even mildly dehydrated, your metabolism may slow down.
#7 SLEEP TIGHT
This should be the easiest on the list but sometimes it’s hard to make sure you’re getting enough zzz’s! If you are not getting enough good quality sleep, your metabolism will not function properly. The two hormones that are key in this process are ghrelin and leptin. Ghrelin tells you when to eat, and when you are sleep-deprived, you have more ghrelin. Leptin is the hormone that tells you to stop eating, and when you are sleep deprived, you have less leptin. SO GET YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP!
ABOUT ME: I have been into health and fitness for as long as I can remember. I think I was the only “girl” to sign up for the Weight Lifting class at my High School! I was always searching for the next, best way to get my body to perform at its peak and push it to the next level. Fitness has always been an integral part of my life, even as I tried various career paths, to little satisfaction. After becoming a Mom of three beautiful children, I personally felt how rewarding it was to teach and share my knowledge and experiences with others. I took my journey to the next level and decided to go “Pro.” I dove in and became certified as a Group Fitness Instructor, and also in TRX Group Fitness and Personal Training. Fitness is my lifelong passion, so I have as much fun tackling a tough class as I do reading a new anatomy book or my time spent on the internet studying different training techniques, physiology, how to perfect form or improve your stride! The line between career, hobby, work and play has blissfully blurred!
