All I Really Need to Know I Learned at Barry’s
by Minsun Park

The same rules that get you the best results in your fitness classes are also practical rules for living your best life. The mind-body connection is a real thing. Who needs life coaching when everything you need to get along with others and make personal gains are lessons you learn in the gym? Here are the lessons I learned. Willing to share some of your own in the comments?

        1. Show up on time.
        2. Don’t text and operate heavy machinery at the same time.
        3. Pay attention and listen to the instructions.
        4. Your mind quits before your body does. Cursing really does ease pain.
        5. Clean up your bodily fluids. Keep your DNA to yourself.
        6. Wash your hands. Because, cooties.
        7. In fact, take a daily shower. Because, hygiene.
        8. Don’t compare yourself to others.
        9. Deeper is better (we’re talking about squats, of course.)
        10. Every minute counts.
        11. Fitness comes in all shapes and sizes, so “success” looks different to everybody.
        12. Make reservations – plan ahead.
        13. It’s a shared space with limited resources, so please share it. Whether you’re on Planet Fitness or Planet Earth (see what we did there?), nobody likes an equipment hog.
        14. Don’t steal somebody else’s stuff.
        15. Choose your partners (workout and otherwise) carefully
        16. Don’t just ask yourself what your goals are. Ask yourself: What pain are you willing to sustain to get those goals?
        17. Strive for Failure. It’s not a sign of weakness, it’s what makes you stronger.
        18. Rest days are important.
        19. Breaking muscle fibers makes them grow bigger –  this especially applies to your heart.
        20. We’re all in this together. Be kind and cheer each other on.
