Healthy London – The New Revolution
by Emma Inkester

[ED. NOTE: To celebrate the opening of Barry’s newest location and London’s 2nd Barry’s, London East, we asked our London correspondent to give us the low-down on the current state of healthy establishments in town and offer a guide to locals and visitors detailing some of the healthiest hot spots.]

London has always had a smattering of vegetarian restaurants, healthy eateries and organic cafes, but I didn’t think we would ever have compared it to the likes of L.A., New York or Miami in their passion for superfoods, cold pressed juice and chia seeds. But now that’s all changing, and in the last year or so there has been a real boom in the number of healthy eating establishments springing up all over the capital. And now some of these locations are even opening second branches, which just shows how on board with a fit and healthy lifestyle us Londoners are becoming!

So whether you are visiting from abroad, or live in London and are looking for a healthier alternative than meeting your friends at the local pub, allow us to give you five options worth trying (and returning to!) when it comes to delicious healthy food and drink in London.

Good Life Eatery (Chelsea and Marylebone)

No reservations in this renowned healthy eating Mecca, but don’t let the queues put you off- delicious eggs, raw foods, juices and gluten free alternatives, you really cannot go wrong. And you may see a celebrity or two!

Daylesford Farm (Westbourne Grove, Pimlico, Oxford St and Marylebone)

Named after the beautiful farm from which the produce is sourced, this eatery is truly an organic-lovers paradise. Whether you are in the mood for a hearty meal or something lighter, you are in the perfect place, and you can pick up some supplies from the farm shop too so that you continue your day or week in the same healthy way!

Roots & Bulbs (Marylebone and South Kensington)

Known for its green juices, the cold pressed options at this café really pack a punch. If you are feeling hardcore go for the G1 juice, and you could treat yourself to a gluten/dairy free brownie, salad or wrap to go with it too. And do not get us started on the protein balls!

Wild Food Cafe (Covent Garden)

Tucked away in the beautiful Neal’s Yard (worth a visit just for the quaint surroundings!), pop up some stairs in the middle of the Yard and into Wild Food Cafe, a calm and healthy oasis in the busyness of Covent Garden. Everything here is raw- we particularly recommend the pizza, and, you have been warned, the desserts are INSANE. Grab two spoons and share with your nearest and dearest.

And last but most definitely not least…

East London

Barry’s Bootcamp Fuel Bar

We couldn’t introduce you to London’s top healthy eateries/juice bars and not mention our beloved Fuel Bar- the ONLY place to refuel after your hardcore workout (but you’re welcome to grab a shake whether or not you Barry’d it that day!) We can vouch for the fact that the shakes genuinely are delicious, the bespoke protein bars and food items available are nutritious and interesting, and most of all the company is brilliant. Grab a shake and catch up with the great people who joined you for the beautiful torture under the red lights.
