Barry’s Babe: Amelia Caflisch

I started going to Barry’s at the London location about 2 1/2 years ago. A friend of mine convinced me to go and I was instantly hooked. I had gained a lot of weight (about 40 pounds) over the past few years due to job changes, stress, the usual! I had always been an athlete, from high school sports to amateur boxing in my mid 20’s (yes, I even competed!). I was constantly yo-yoing from being in great shape to overweight. It became harder and harder for me to stay fit until eventually, all my motivation went out the door. I started eating anything and everything I wanted in every portion size imaginable until none of my clothes really fit anymore. Aside from clothes not fitting, I had no self confidence and was overall, just a bit of a grump. There were multiple break-downs in women’s dressing rooms when I was trying to put jeans or tops on that used to fit that just wouldn’t anymore! They say your outer appearance is a reflection of how you feel on the inside, and I can honestly say, I was not feeling great. I was wearing sweat pants and t-shirts only, because those were the only clothes that I felt comfortable in.


When my now husband proposed to me in 2013, I made the decision to get myself in the best shape that I possibly could and make every effort that I could to be happy with how I looked. There was no way I wanted to get married feeling the way that I felt–which was just out of control with my fitness and diet and unhappy with my appearance. I signed up for a meal delivery program that really focused on assisting with smaller portion sizes and attended Barry’s 4-5 times a week. The Barry’s instructors constantly helped me with my form and pushed me on the tread. The loud, fun, music; insanely fit instructors; and (let’s be honest) incredibly flattering lighting kept me pushing and coming back for more! I started noticing more muscle definition, my clothes were starting to fit a little looser, and my appetite was changing as well. We all know how important your diet is, and I didn’t want to undo all the hard work I had put in at Barry’s, so I made an effort to improve my nutrition even on cheat days! After six months of a complete lifestyle change (which was definitely tough), I went from 165 pounds to 125 pounds. I would be lying if I said it was easy, but Barry’s made it fun!

I traveled all over the USA to visit friends and almost every city had a Barry’s location, which made it so much easier for me to stay in shape when I was traveling. With the exception of four studios, I’ve been to every other Barry’s studio in the WORLD (including, Oslo)! Since starting at Barry’s, I think I’ve recruited about 15 different friends and colleagues, because my love for it was just contagious and people could see the results! When my husband and I moved to Boston this past November, the first thing we did was sign up for Barry’s classes. I then applied for a job and started working at the Boston location, which has been really fun. Great people, great vibes, and always a great workout. I love greeting people (especially, newbies), and getting them pumped for a class. :) Barry’s classes have become a part of my life and my healthy lifestyle journey. I’ve managed to stay in shape 1.5 years after starting this journey, and Barry’s plays a huge role in that.

I am a wild animal biologist. :) I graduated this past September from the Zoological Society of London and Royal Veterinary College with a master’s degree in Wild Animal Biology. I wrote my dissertation on myrmecophages (ant-eating mammals) so have done a lot of cool research on anteaters! Sadly, there are no anteaters here in Boston, so I am doing research remotely with my professor in Zurich, Switzerland until I can find a position here in conservation research. I just submitted my paper for publication in hopes that it will help us improve the nutrition of anteaters in captivity.
